Chuck Williams
Guest of Honor
It required vision to turn a converted hardware store in
a small northern California town into North America’s
source for kitchen finery and housewares, but that’s
exactly what Chuck Williams did. Opened in 1956, the first
Williams-Sonoma sold cooking utensils that Williams had gathered
during his travels to France. A move to San Francisco in 1958
and a small catalog mailing created the momentum that has
seen some 235 stores open in the U.S. and Canada. Today Williams
is Vice Chairman of the Board of Williams-Sonoma. The James
Beard Foundation inducted Chuck into the D’Artagnan
Cervena Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America,
then honored him with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995.
He was named Bon Appétit’s 1999 Tastemaker
of the Year, and the Housewares Foundation’s Humanitarian
of the Year for his support of the Boys and Girls Club of
America; cancer and AIDS research.
