Deli delights. Legendary delicatessen Shopsy's has opened in the former Future Bakery & Cafe spot on Yonge Street north of St. Clair Avenue. This is the third location for the storied pastrami palace, first opened on Spadina Avenue 76 years ago by Harry and Jenny Shopsowitz. Under current owners Lewis Allen and Joe Bonavota, the 400-seat midtown incarnation features such deli classics as Cabbage Rolls Royce and Royal Canadian Mounted Beef sandwiches from chef Eberhard Moegle. Don Schell has left Yorkville's Latin supper club Ba-ba-luù to take over chef's duties at Keystone Alley Cafe in Stratford, Ontario. Schell takes over from Sheldon Russell, who returns to cooking full-time at sister restaurant The Church. Schell plans to serve modern French cooking with inter-national accents at the 78-seat cafe. Meanwhile, at Ba-ba-luù, co-owner Nubia Solano has stepped behind the stoves. In another departure, Michael Potters has left Winston's. His replacement is Olivier Boels, formerly consulting chef at Zola, another member of Winston's owner Roni Hitti's restaurant family. Boels has moved away from the strictly classical French menu of his predecessor to introduce lighter sauces and some verticality to the plates. At the same time, top main course prices have been lowered from $70 to $52. |
