Ivy league. Belgo Group has bought The Ivy, London's most fashionable restaurant and favorite haunt of the famous. The sale also includes J. Sheeky (formerly Sheeky's), and Le Caprice, another of the capitol's more fashionable restaurants. Belgo Group already owns Belgo Centraal, Belgo Noord, and Pizza Express, and recently purchased the trio of The Collection, Daphne's, and Pasha. Former Ivy owners Chris Corbin and Jeremy King, known for rejecting other bidders in the past, will stay on to run things. Harvey Nichols has signed a 25-year lease for a property in Leadenhall Street. The former Bank of New York building will become the seventh restau-rant for Harvey Nicks when it opens in early 1999. Meanwhile, watch for Henry Harris of Harvey Nichols's Fifth Floor Restaurant, who is cooking at the Beard House this month with Raji Jallepalli. Tentazioni's owners have opened Grano in Chiswick. The short, frequently changing modern Italian menu is strong on fish, game, and pasta. Purple Sage has opened on Wigmore Street. Go for superior pizzas and great Italian dishes at moderate prices. Also opened in Wigmore Street is the third branch of Wagamama. Restaurant One-O-One is a new fish eatery on the ground floor of the Sheraton Park Tower in Knightsbridge. It's so fish oriented that there is a separate menu just for sea bass. Morton's Club in Berkeley Square has opened its first-floor dining room to the public. Now known as Morton's--The Restaurant, the dining room has long been regarded as one of the most beautiful in London. Michelin-starred chef Garry Hollihead is preparing classic French dishes with a nod to Britain's best. Sir Terence Conran has opened his first City restaurant, Coq d'Argent. The rooftop restaurant seats 150, with additional seating for 75 in the bar; the gardens and view are stunning. Executive chef is Stephen Goodlad. Another "coq" is crowing. Langan's Coq d'Or is a brasserie on Old Brompton Road owned by Richard Shepherd and actor/restaurateur Michael Caine, owners of Langan's Bistro and Langan's Brasserie. European-style 1 Lombard Street has opened in the heart of the City. Austrian-born, Michelin-starred chef Herbert Berger over-sees the bar, brasserie, and dining room. |
